Are you tired of public processes that get bogged down because they are unwieldy, ineffective and meaningless? Are you sick of meetings that get hijacked by a boisterous few? Do you believe that community involvement is essential to creating successful public spaces and public policy?

In this introductory workshop you will learn how to fully engage communities in a productive and creative process that start with ideas and end in collective action, while creating broad ownership over your project. The day is a mix of lecture, practice, and discussion.

Over the day, you will learn how to:

  • Structure and implement effective and decisive planning processes while maximizing community ownership
  • Avoid common pitfalls for community meetings
  • Become a more effective facilitator
  • Design a process that takes ideas into action while engaging community members at every step
  • Apply this approach to create a pilot project in your community

Milenko founded Pomegranate Center to strengthen communities through collaborative placemaking. In addition to creating public spaces, the Center’s work includes training, planning, and consulting. The “Pomegranate Approach” has been developed and tested over 30 years of convening hundreds of community meetings and designing/building more than 50 gathering places.

Portrait Painting Workshop with Gabriel Lipper

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ashland Art Center, Main Classroom
357 E. Main St.
Ashland, OR 97520
Fee: $90 members, $125 nonmembers
Class Limit: 18

Paint powerful portraits with strong form, vibrant color, and rich paint. The secret behind the freshest painting is generally not what we see on its surface, but the strong foundation underneath. I will be demonstrating how I approach a portrait from the ground up. We will be working from a live portrait model, and I will demonstrate my entire portrait process from beginning to end. Spend the day working along with me through each step of the painting, or, just bring a sketch pad and take notes. Whatever your level, this workshop will have something to offer.

Additional supplies needed for this workshop: drawing paper, sketch pad, drawing board, art gum eraser, H and HB pencils, as well as your normal painting supplies.*
